Monthly Highlights // January 2018

Hola mis amigos. It’s time for a round-up of my monthly highlights, aka the things I have been loving in January.

I believe focusing on the good stuff to be really important, particularly in these dark winter months when we’re all traipsing around in the drizzle, hoping and praying for a slither of sunlight and wondering what it’ll take to raise the funds for a trip to the Seychelles.

Each day I make a list of things that have gone well, or things I think ought to be celebrated. It does wonders for your confidence when at the end of the day you can look back over it and think ‘Damn, I was basically Superwoman today.’

You might think you’ve had a bad month, or a bad week, but quite often when you look back at the good things that happened, you’ll see that’s not the case. Unless you really have had a bad month or week. Hopefully the next one will be better.

Anyway, I think that’s just about enough waffle for one Thursday. Let’s crack on.

1. My 30th birthday (obviously)

Luke whisked me away to the Forest of Dean to celebrate my 30th. We stayed in a cabin in the woods, went for lovely walks, saw some wildlife, read books, curled up in front of the fire, and hung out in the hot tub. I wrote a post on it HERE if you’re interested!

2. Pizza with friends

Because you only turn 30 once (unless you’re Phoebe Buffet), I decided to invite a bunch of my lovely work friends out for dinner. We went to The Stable where I had an amazing vegan pizza, and it made me very happy to have lots of great people around one table.

3. A trip to La Capital

Luke’s cousin moved to Dubai recently, and to bid him au revoir (or وداعا, as they say in Dubai), we were invited down to London for drinks. We made a day of it, and went exploring around Notting Hill and Kensington.

4. Seeing Ed Byrne perform

Seeing Ed Byrne perform as part of his ‘Spoiler Alert’ Tour is one of the shiniest of highlights this month. If you’re not overly sure who he is, you might recognise him from panel shows such as Mock the Week. He’s frickin’ hilarious, and I’ve made a promise to myself to get tickets for his next tour.

5. Classes at the gym

I’ve been mixing up my exercise regime this year, and trying classes. I’ve been going to pilates, spin and aerobics, and I’ve been loving it. Not only do you forget you’re exercising because you’re having so much fun (maybe not in spin…I definitely feel like I’m working hard in spin), but my gym has a lovely community feel to it, and it’s great to be a part of that.

6. New stationery

Ah, stationery. One of my great loves. Is there anything better than wandering around Paperchase on pay day? I have so many notebooks that I’ve actually lost count. But, as I point out to Luke on a weekly basis, they all get put to good use. Luckily, my awesome friends and family bought me some notebooks for my birthday, which means I get the benefit of new notebooks, without the hassle of having to explain to Luke why they’re essential purchases.

7. Meditating everyday

I’ve been meditating for about two years now, and this month I decided to do an experiment and see how I’d feel if I meditated every single day without fail. I’m happy to report that I have been successful in my quest! Even if it’s just for 10 minutes, I’ve been making sure to do it every day. I’ve definitely noticed a difference in my ability to manage to stress and emotions,  so I’m going to keep going. If you’re interested in giving it a go yourself, I’d recommend trying the Calm app. I use the paid for version, which is worth every penny. There are lots of great guided meditations on the free version too, though.

8. Sleepy Body Lotion

Holy crapole, I am obsessed with this stuff. I’d never heard of it before my birthday, but apparently it’s big news on the internet. My friends, I can see why. I slather it all over my legs, arms and sometimes face before bed, and it makes me drift off into a soothing slumber. Plus, it makes my skin soft and I smell like a dream. Highly recommend you get yourself a pot.

9. It started with a tweet (a HILARIOUS book)

On my birthday I took myself off to Waterstones to pick up some new reading material. I saw this book, flicked through the pages and thought it looked funny, and boy, was I right. I really struggled to put it down. Every time I got a spare couple of minutes, I’d be reading it. It tells the story of Rosie, a 31-year old woman obsessed with social media. When she makes a big mistake at work, she finds herself being whisked away by her sister to an isolated, crumbling farmhouse in Cumbria, for a digital detox. Rosie must learn to live without her phone. Luckily, there are a few distractions in the form of the villagers, and one very handsome one in particular…

10. Molly’s Game, La La Land, Trolls

Luke and I went to watch Molly’s Game at the beginning of January, and it was SO GOOD. I’m usually more partial to a rom-com, and there really wasn’t any rom involved, but I still loved it. Jessica Chastain is such a talented actress, and I found the story of Molly’s life to be fascinating. It’s based on a true story, too, which makes it even more awesome. We also re-watched La La Land on a cosy night in, and Trolls, after it was recommended by a friend. If you’re ever in need of a feel-good film – Trolls is the one.

11. My new porridge recipe

At the risk of tooting my own trumpet, I’ve been having my Chocolate & Pomegranate Porridge pretty much every day. It’s the perfect way to start the day!
