I love discovering new places to eat, and when they come fully-vegan, I love it even more.
Imagine, a world where I don’t have to say “Is it vegan if I don’t have the cheese?” or “are there eggs used in these bean burgers?” or my personal favourite, “Do you have anything that’s suitable for vegans that isn’t a side salad?” I was living the vegan dream when I visited the brand new ‘Natural Healthy Foods‘ eatery in Birmingham yesterday.
My new favourite vegan spot opened its doors to the public at the weekend, and is situated on Suffolk Street, opposite the Mailbox – pretty damn handy if you’re in the city centre. And if you’re not, it’s a stone’s throw away from New Street Station. Perfecto.
It’s not like your usual cafe for 3 reasons:
- It’s a hot and cold buffet
- You grab a plate and serve yourself
- You weigh your plate when you get the till, and that determines the price of your meal. I know, it took a while for me to get my head around this concept. (But what if I put too much food on my plate because I’m so hungry and I accidentally spend £30 on lunch and I’m too polite to say anything?!)
I can honestly say, I love it. The food is some of the best I’ve ever had. It’s made from the highest quality organic ingredients, and it’s all made fresh onsite that day. I don’t think I’ve ever walked away after lunch with my stomach feeling quite so fantastic. I’m serious.
Very helpfully, you can also pick up some food to take away. A large box will cost you £7.95, and a small will be £5.95.
I went with my lovely friend Andra (who isn’t vegan), and she said:
“That’s got to be the best meal I’ve ever eaten.”
That’s a direct quote right there.
My plate (bottom in the photo below) came to under £8, and Andra’s (top) came to slightly more than that. We both got the small plates, but there are larger ones available if you’d like to eat like a king. We also shared a strawberry kombucha, because why not?
Let’s see some photos of this glorious food, shall we?
Everything is really healthy and completely vegan, and you can just add a little bit of everything to your plate, depending on what takes your fancy. Plus, you don’t have to wait around to be served, and then for your food to come – it’s all ready and waiting for you, my friend. This is perfect if you’re on your lunch break and you usually spend it checking your watch and wondering how late back you’ll be if you wolf your food down and then power walk back to the office.
Bonus! There’s also a small shop attached to the eatery, so you can pick up lots of healthy, vegan bits and pieces while you’re there. I bought some of my favourite tofu, as well as the yummiest vegan chocolate to ever have existed. In short, I suggest you pay them a visit – you won’t regret it!
Fun Fact: Natural Healthy Foods is also home to Birmingham’s only Kombucha Bar. Wowzer.
I’m already desperate to go back – Andra and I are making plans for a return visit, and I’ve told Luke all about it so I’ll be bringing him here very soon, too!
