2018 Goals & Intentions

Hello everybody, and a very happy new year to you! I hope 2018 has started off well and you’re looking forward to a year of fun, excitement and opportunities.

I’ve had a really nice start to the year so far. I’ve spent loads of time with Luke, I’ve been for a 4.5 mile walk in Clent Hills; I’ve been to a spin class and a Clubbercise class; I’ve seen Molly’s Game at the cinema – highly recommend, by the way, Jessica Chastain is phenomenal; I’ve had a relaxing soak in the bath; I’ve finished reading a really lovely book which was set partly in Denmark (one of my favourite countries); I’ve watched La La Land (possibly my all time favourite film), and I’ve started making plans for 2018. Today I’m having a PJ day and I’m ALL about that life.

For many the new year is just the arbitrary passing of time, and for others, it’s an excuse to design a new and improved version of who they think they should be. I sit somewhere in the middle. I like to use new year as an opportunity to reflect on where my life is at the moment, and whether or not I’m happy with various aspects of it.

It’s been a long ole’ time since I last made a resolution like ‘eat fewer crisps’, ‘stop biting nails’ or ‘exercise every day.’ I think picking out your perceived ‘flaws’ and implementing behaviours to ‘correct’ them is a negative way of doing things, and all it does it put pressure on you to be perfect. As soon as you skip a day of exercise, or you find yourself eating 4 packets of Walkers prawn cocktail in one sitting, you give up on your resolutions and have to deal with the aftermath of guilt and self loathing.

I prefer to think of themes, or goals that I’d like to achieve for the year. This year my main intention is to have fun. After a pretty dismal 2017 (yeah yeah, Queen of Understatement over here), I want to laugh and smile more, and that means doing things that I enjoy, and being easy on myself. My plans for 2018 look a little like this…

Read lots of books
Including both fiction + self development

Do lots of writing
One of the main things that makes my soul happy

Prioritise health
This means lots of meditation, self-care, less screen time, lots of healthy meals, positive thinking, fitness, sleep and mindfulness.

Travel within England 
Planning a summer road trip along the southern coast – watch this space!

Continue saving for our dream house
Well, maybe not DREAM HOUSE. But one with a big kitchen for me, and a workshop for Luke.

Grow this here blog you’re looking at
I’m hoping to put out lots of regular content relating to all things health, wellness, life, travel, food etc etc.

Side note – I’m also considering just having abbysweeting.com as my blog url. I was saving it for something else, but if that something else happens, I might just merge it with the blog. Thoughts, guys and gals?

Spend more time with friends and family
2017 taught me how valuable friends and family really are. Sometimes life gets in the way of regular meet ups, and pretty much everyone I know is having babies, but I’m determined to see more of them all this year. Babies included.

Dance, dance, dance
I’ve loved dancing for as long as I can remember. I started having classes young, and danced up until I was 21 (apart from a brief respite when I had glandular fever aged 16…but I still danced around the kitchen when I could, so maybe that doesn’t count). When I returned home after university, I couldn’t find an adult class at the right level for me. Now, I’ve found a class I like the look of, and 2018 is going to be the year I get back into dance.

    I’m keeping a grateful diary this a year. Sometimes I can forget to be grateful for things and look at the negative of each day so I am aiming to look for the positives every day! I have a pretty notebook and at the end of each day I want to write something that I am grateful for. The idea comes from a few places; Jeff Brazier and his one minute of gratitude on Instagram and a quote that I have seen about each day of the year being the blank page of a book so make it a good one .

      3. I bloody love that quote!

      Something I’ve been doing over the last six months or so is using the notes app on my phone to jot down when something good happens during the day, or when I do something that I should be celebrating 🙂 That helps me to focus on the positives! It’s also nice to read back when you need a bit of a pick me up 🙂 Good luck with your gratitudes! x
